Bare Metal Software for Crash Recovery

Network disaster recovery

Features and Highlights

You not only need to backup and be able to restore, but you also need to be able to rapidly recover. After all what good is a backup if you cannot return to operation in a matter of minutes?

You data is one of your most important assets. Selecting a backup product is important, more importantly is backing up your data regularly and most importantly is being prepared for a crash. A crash is inevitable, a crash is costly, and when a crash occurs, this is when costs, frustration and aggrevation can mount. The longer you are down the larger the financial loss to your organization.

Unylogix believes your data needs to be completely protected. This means that you must have a solution that allows you to backup your data, continuously monitor and backup changes and to allow you to rapidly return to operation. We believe backup is not just backup. The answer is to combine bare metal technology with backup technology.

By integrating backup and bare metal we have a simple cost effective solution that meets your needs. BareMetal Plus or BMP is a powerful add-on for any organization that currently possesses a backup solution. BMP works with every major manufacturer of backup and restore software (e.g., VRTS, LGTO, CA, Tivoli, etc.) allowing you to rapidly recover without re-loading the operating system prior to beginning your restore with your existing backup software. Additionally, BMP is a powerful and extremely compelling solution for any organization searching for a backup product. We have raised the bar by not just providing you with bare metal or backup. We are providing you with a complete data protection strategy and solution.

BareMetal Plus supports 9 server operating environments (FreeBSD 3.2 and higher, OpenUNIX 8, Other Linux, Red Hat Linux 7.x, 9, SCO OpenServer 5, SCO Unix Classic (ODT), SCO UnixWare 7.1.1 and lower, Solaris SPARC 2.5 – 2.8, SVR4 (UnixWare 2.x Intel, Sol Intel) ) and 13 client platforms (FreeBSD 3.2 and higher, Open BSD, OpenUNIX 8, Microsoft Windows 3.x, 95, 98, ME, Microsoft Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Netware 3.x, 4.x, 5.x, 6.x, Other Linux, Red Hat Linux 7.x, 9, SCO OpenServer 5, SCO Unix Classic (ODT), SCO UnixWare 7.1.1 and lower, Solaris SPARC 2.5 – 2.8, SVR4 (UnixWare 2.x Intel, Sol Intel) ). The product provides true bare metal capture and restore plus backup powered by Backup Professional.

The first step in properly protecting your environment with BMP is to create the crash media. This is accomplished via a few simple steps. For Intel operating environments the product takes a snap shot of your system hard drive. We then place the image either onto the network server, a local hard drive, hard disk or tape. For Solaris the product creates a crash tape or crash floppy. For SCO Unix we create bootable media to prepare hard disk, partitions and filesystems.

After the bootable media is created next a bare metal crash master is recorded. The master can be housed on disk or tape. First the data is is captured and optimized. Disk Optimization scrubs free space of a filesystem. This means that any data residing in the free space is zeroed out. This means deleted files, old data that was on a hard disk before an operating system was installed and even viruses that are trying to hide in the free space. Disk Optimization works for the following filesystems FAT-16, FAT-32, FAT-32x, NTFS, Ext2, Ext3, Reiser filesystem, SCO EAFS, SCO HTFS, Unixware 7 Vxfs, and Unixware 7 Secure UFS, Solaris Berkley UFS.

The disk optimization process allows the bare metal crash master to capture only real data that is valuable to the customer and avoid capturing junk data the was on the hard disk before the system was even installed or deleted files that the user no longer needs.

This will greatly enhance the efficiency and speed of the Bare Metal capture process. It will also allow it to maximally condense and compress the crash backup.

The data can be tested and bit-level verified. This ensures that when the data is needed for restoration, it will be exactly like that backed up. Today’s computer systems are complex and the data goes from the server to the client through many intermediary steps. At each of these steps, there is a chance for error. Although this chance for each step is very small, it is still not zero. Why take any chance with your data when you have the option of knowing for absolute certainty that the data can be restored with 100.0000% accuracy? Bit-level-verification gives you complete and 100% assurance that when you need to recover, all the components needed from the tape read heads, hard disk drive read heads, host bus adapter, memory, DMA transfer chips, network card, TCP/IP stack, routers, switches, hubs, receiving network card, memory, PCI bus, data transfer ports, are all working properly and most importantly that the data was recorded correctly.

After the crash recovery media is created it may be removed and placed for safekeeping. The product also provides a complete backup and restore solution as well. The product uses a client/server architecture to provide enterprise-wide services via TCP/IP. You may backup and restore to your choice of media. The product allows you to create master, file by file and incremental backups via a schedule. The product backs up Windows Registry, Windows open files, RAW partitions, device files, sym links, empty directories and more. The product is easy to install, operate and support. There are 4 interfaces available, server command-line, server character (telnet), server GUI, Client GUI and wide variety of reporting capabilities. You can send and receive reports via email, printer, pda or cell phone. Bit-level verification report showing number of files verified, number not checked, number with problems and full status information. Diagnostics and error messages recorded in database and available and available at a single mouse click. Additional highlights include:
