The Gadzoox® Networks Slingshot 4210 2Gb Open Fabric Fibre Channel Switch is a high-speed, standards-based, full-fabric switch designed to provide the performance, connectivity and availability needed by clusters today and tomorrow. Unprecedented Performance

The non-blocking architecture of the Slingshot 4210 provides 2Gb full-duplex connectivity on each of the ten ports. You can now build a high performance SAN with end-to-end 2Gb throughput, or flexibly increase bandwidth where you need it. The doubling of throughput compared to existing 1Gb switches allows IT professionals to keep up with the amazing growth in the amount of data that needs to be stored and accessed by an IT infrastructure that continues to increase its performance.

The Slingshot 4210 allows 2Gb-capable systems to operate at full speed even though 1Gb devices are connected to the same switch, allowing you to deploy Slingshot in a 1Gb environment and have the infrastructure necessary for future 2Gb purchases (Figure 1).

Designed for HA Clusters

True high availability clusters need separate redundant paths provided by two switches. The half-rack-wide Slingshot 4210 is designed to sit side by side in a compact 1U slot, saving valuable rack space. The dual-mount option allows one switch to remain active even while servicing the other switch, enabling 24x7 access to data, and reducing repair time. In addition, the second switch can be added without disrupting the network (Figure 3).

For clustering applications, a Slingshot 4210 ten-port switch allows you to support your configurations today, and scale to higher node requirements in the future, providing investment protection for both hardware devices and qualification support resources. Next-generation clustering applications will connect up to eight servers, requiring a ten port switch such as the Slingshot 4210 to attach storage to the server cluster (Figure 2).

Industry-Leading Flexibility

The Slingshot 4210 supports the industry-standard open fabric protocol (FC-SW-2), which allows Slingshot to route data and share information with fabric switches from other vendors. To further protect your investment in existing Fibre Channel equipment, Slingshot 4210 also supports Fibre Channel loop devices. Slingshot 4210 uses standards-based, hot-swappable small form pluggable (SFP) ports to give you the flexibility to choose media on a port-by-port basis (Figure 4).

Slingshot's fabric support, 2Gb bandwidth, and port density provide you flexibility in choosing the SAN topology to deploy. The port count and bandwidth may allow a single switch to meet your connectivity needs. As your needs grow, you can efficiently scale your infrastructure by connecting to a Slingshot 4218 or director-class switch. When connecting to another 4210 or a Slingshot 4218, you can dynamically control bandwidth of trunks connecting switches by selecting how many ports to connect. The self-healing trunks automatically reroute data in the rare occurrence of a path failure (Figure 5).

Intelligent Management

In order to ease installation and management, Slingshot 4210 ports automatically configure to support 2 or 1Gb, fabric or loop devices. By addressing the connectivity needs of existing 1Gb and new 2Gb loop or fabric devices, the Slingshot 4210 provides the highest level of interoperability and investment protection.

Every Slingshot 4210 comes with Ventana SANtools FX software, allowing you to manage the switch and the fabric via a command line or web-based graphical interface. The intuitive GUI is easy to learn and use, reducing storage management expenses by providing drag-and-drop zoning, pop-up tips, and on-line help files. SANtools FX includes a visualization of the entire SAN to give a quick overview of the status of all switches, and provide a single view for managing the fabric.

Support for industry-standard MIBs enables SNMP-based applications to access switch information to more efficiently manage the entire SAN or IT infrastructure. Newer versions of software can be non-disruptively downloaded in-band or out-of-band.

Reliability and Serviceability

The Slingshot 4210 includes N+1 fans, and provides LEDs on front and back to indicate health of the switch. Serviceability is enhanced by routing all cabling from one end of the Slingshot 4210, enabling easy access and replacement, especially when mounted in the side-by-side rack mount kit. Reliability is ensured by continuous monitoring of all mechanical and environmental components including ports, fans, power supplies, temperature and link status. Embedded port monitoring enables the switch to automatically partition failed ports out of the fabric and re-activate them when the problem clears.
