Sony Super-AIT Tape Technology

S-AIT Media

Advanced Metal Evaporated (AME) tape continues to be one of the key enabling technologies for a wide range of industry-accepted tape storage and recording applications, including Sony's innovative S-AIT format. AME media delivers the best performance metrics in the business, with the greatest average number of media uses, and the longest archival life. This is due to the unique formulation of the media, the use of Memory-in-Cassette (MIC) technology and the recording method itself.

S-AIT media uses Sony's Advanced Metal Evaporated tape technology which provides a pure metal recording layer, enabling a high frequency response and thereby high-density recording. AME tape's use of a "diamond-like-carbon" (DLC) protective layer provides superb durability and long archival life. Twenty times tougher than a standard oxidation layer, DLC's carbon coating dramatically improves abrasion resistance and overall tape durability. This advanced technology provides a cost-effective, high-speed, large-capacity tape storage option that can reliably backup and protect large-scale network servers as well as handle other storage-intensive applications.

Another contributor to S-AIT media performance (and the "intelligent" part of its name) is its MIC, a 64Kbit solid-state memory chip that stores the cartridge's system log and file search information. This information can be used immediately by the drive, enhancing data access, improving media management and reducing overall latency.

The S-AIT format will leverage Sony's proven AME technology to provide state-of-the-art capacity and performance levels. S-AIT's extraordinary magnetic properties, storage density and durability are key to tape applications in high-duty-cycle enterprise storage.
