System capacities and limits

What are the system limits of NetStorNAS Filer?

NetStorNAS features 5 available expansion slots for high-performance options such as additional Gigabit Copper/Fiber Optic Ethernet or additional SCSI bus channels for higher I/O throughput or locally attached Tape Backup (single or multi-drive/multi-slot) devices.

  • From 120 GB to 64TB capacity with dedicated hardware RAID
  • Available with IDE, SATA, SCSI or Fibre Channel based disk storage, all RAID protected (Up-to 15 RAID sets)
  • Up-to 6 Gigabit NICs per system (Dual 10/100/1000 Gigabit Copper NICs standard, add up-to (4) additional Gigabit Copper or Fiber Optic NICs - You can mix and match copper and fiber optic Gigabit if needed.)
  • Unlimited number of users with no client access licenses required
  • Up-to 32 snapshot setup scheduled for quick restoration of previous versions or instances of files (upgrade to 64 snapshots is available)
  • Multiple backup support options (local and remote, including SCSI and Fibre Channel based local tape devices)
File system limits, RAID volume limits, equipment limits:
  • Up-to 4 GB memory
  • Attach up-to (15) separate dedicated hardware RAID arrays (IDE, SCSI, SATA, Fibre Channel), total capacity up-to 64TB
  • Dynamic RAID expansion up-to 64 TB total capacity

Fault tolerant and redundancy options

What are the fault tolerant and redundancy options and features of NetStorNAS Filer?

There are many options and choices when it comes to NetStorNAS redundant and fault-tolerant configurations. There are hot-swap redundant power supplies, hot-swap cooling fans, hot-swap hard disk drives, RAID for data redundancy with hot-spares and several tape backup options.

The NetStorNAS uses a Journaling File System (XFS) for mission-critical applications to protect your data and which is capable of supporting up-to 64TB of data. In addition you can use the APC SmartUPS battery backup systems connection to make controlled power-failure shutdowns.

NetStorNAS and RAID controllers

NetStorNAS 2U rackmount header powers the NAS operating system, while dedicated RAID controllers power the I/O and RAID calculations. NetStorNAS can be configured with up-to (6) Ultra160 SCSI hard disk drives internally within the 2U rackmount NAS header, or for more powerful RAID options and scalability, most configurations feature external dedicated RAID hardware that attaches directly to the 2U rackmount NAS header via SCSI. By utilizing the more powerful external dedicated RAID options, you can scale NetStorNAS from 120 GB up-to 64 TB of storage, and any increment in-between. Utilizing the most up-to-date technology, you can utilize these SCSI connections on the NAS Header while the hard disk drives powering the RAID system are IDE or SATA based.

Managing share and file/folder security

How do I manage user security permissions for NetStorNAS Filer?

NetStorNAS supports user-level, share-level, and file-level security. Authentication takes place via a NT domain (PDC), or 2000/2003 Active Directory Services (mixed or native mode DC). For Unix/Linux environments, you can use the internal user database, or synchronize with an existing NIS domain.

Network settings and security are administered via the NetStorNAS web interface (view demo of interface)

NetStorNAS presents you with an easy to understand layout/overview of your RAID set(s). You can create a share for each RAID set, or create folders on the RAID set and share those folders individually.

NetStorNAS also allows file-level security. A common example would be user home-directory storage. For example:
1. Create a 2 TB share called "home".
2. For each user, create a folder in the share. Example, user Bob Johnson could be folder "bjohnson".
3. Set security for that folder so that only Bob Johnson can access his own files.
4. Set security on the share so that everyone can mount it, but they can only view their own folder.
5. Optionally set per-user disk quotas.

Backing up data locally or remotely

How to backup data stored on NetStorNAS?

The NetStorNAS supports network backups such as Arkeia, Veritas, CA/BrightStor, Legato, BakBone and Microsoft.

All local backup options supported for single and multi-drive/multi-slot devices are managed by Arkeia GUI software.

In addition the included Snapshot feature of the NetStorNAS allows for quick restoration of accidentally deleted files. Setup multiple snapshot schedules for peace of mind, as 32 snapshots are included with optional upgrade to 64 snapshots. Remember, snapshots and RAID are no substitution for a good tape backup disaster recovery strategy!
