Using Snap Server EmailXtender Archive (EX/A) Software with Snap Servers
Challenge
The Explosion of E-mail and Attachments Is Creating Problems for Both Users and Administrators
- Have you run out of space on your mail server?
- Had problems retrieving old e-mails or attachments?
- Have you been unable to receive and/or send e-mails because they exceeded the message size limit?
- Lost e-mails due to a virus attack?
If you said “yes” to any one of these questions, chances are you belong to a growing majority of users and
IT administrators who are overwhelmed by the volume of e-mails they have to manage.
Solution
A Simple, Cost-Effective Solution in E-mail Storage and Retrieval Management.
- Snap Server EX/A software automatically copies e-mails and attachments from Exchange or
Notes/Domino mail servers into a centralized message archive on your Snap Server
- EX/A then frees up space on the mail servers by removing the original data-intensive attachment files
- Users can retrieve archived messages from their Inbox quickly and easily via shortcuts
Benefit
Reduce Costs and Boost Productivity
- Overall messaging system performance is improved and backup time is greatly reduced
- Limits on mailbox and message sizes are no longer required, increasing user productivity
- Instant, easy access to archived messages allows IT administrators to focus on mission critical tasks
- Direct restoration of a message and attachment enables IT administrators to recover deleted or
virus-infected e-mails quickly and easily
- Easy installation and management provide instant cost savings
Supported E-mail Environments
- Microsoft Exchange 5.5
- Microsoft Exchange 2000
- Lotus Domino 4.6 and higher
System Requirements for EmailXtender Archive Server
- Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server
- 566 MHz Pentium Processor
- 384 MB RAM
- Sufficient hard-disk capacity, for today’s e-mail,
as well as projected growth
How It Works
- E-mails and attachments are automatically copied
from the Exchange or Notes/Domino mail server
based on pre-set scheduling rules
- Attachments are then removed from the mail servers
and replaced with archived shortcuts that take up
much less space
- Messages from one or multiple mail servers are
consolidated into a centralized archive on the EX/A
server and ultimately migrated to the Snap Server
- EX/A uses a relational database management system
to index the metadata of the messages and removes
the attachments off the overloaded mail servers
- Individual messages can be selectively restored from
the Snap Server or an entire mailbox can also be
restored
FAQ
Q. Where is the EX/A software installed? Does it have
to be installed on user desktops?
A. EX/A is installed on a Windows 2000 server with
the appropriate e-mail client. The e-mail client is
then used to connect to the e-mail server. No
software is installed on the client desktop.
Q. Which Snap Server models work with the EX/A
software?
A. EX/A currently supports the use of the Snap
Server 12000 and 4100 products.
Q. How does EX/A improve mail server performance
and reduce backup time?
A.
The use of EX/A reduces the storage requirements
on the mail server by transparently shortcutting
messages with attachments to the EX/A Server. In
addition, EX/A enables automated policies to
remove aged messages from a user’s mailbox. By
performing these automated tasks, daily backup
and restore procedures are streamlined and the
reduction in the quantity of messages in the
message server improves overall performance.
