Snap OS Information

The fundamental advantage of the Snap Server is its embedded operating system that is highly optimized for the single-purpose of data storage. Snap OS is easy to install, manage and maintain. Snap Servers provide cross platform support for Windows, Unix, Linux, Macintosh and Novell.

The Snap OS offers features, including the ability to set disk space quotas, access permissions at the file and directory level, SNMP support, a full-functioning FTP server, and SMART predictive disk failure analysis. The net result is superb control, security and functionality.

The latest version of Snap OS provides an enhanced workgroup feature set including additional cross platform capabilities and the flexibility to develop applications based upon Java technology.

SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Report Technology) Disk Failure Analysis

SMART predictive disk failure analysis is integrated into the operating system and checks disk health regularly during run time. Imminent failure generates an "error" level message in the log and sends an e-mail to the Administrator. Note: e-mail notification must be enabled on the Snap Server.

SMART also monitors:
  • Internal motor performance
  • Media
  • Heads
  • Electronics and overall status

The previous SMART version only ran during boot-up; this new version runs periodically while the server is in use.
