Your critical links to fail-safe data protection and recovery.
In today's high-risk world, you can't afford to take chances—especially when it comes to protecting your data! Fires, floods, earthquakes, and other catastrophic events are every IT manager's nightmare. But now you can sit back and relax. Hitachi Data Systems offers two remote copy/disaster recovery choices that let you breathe a little easier. Designed specifically for the Hitachi Freedom 7700, Hitachi Remote Copy (HRC), and Hitachi Extended Remote Copy (HXRC) automate the duplicating of current production data from a primary site to a remote site. These remote copy features ensure that your mission-critical data is safe, secure, and current.

HRC—data protection at its best.
Hitachi Remote Copy offers two modes of copy operation: synchronous and semi-synchronous. The synchronous copy option gives you the highest degree of data currency and integrity. Semi-synchronous copy is similar to synchronous copy but provides improved performance and support for longer distances. HRC continuously updates copies of your data at the remote site. With the synchronous option, copies are completely synchronous with the originals; with the semi-synchronous option, there is a maximum delay of one I/O request per Logical Volume Image (LVI).

Functionally compatible with the industry-standard Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy (PPRC), HRC duplicates disk data from a primary 7700 subsystem to a remote 7700 subsystem using industry-standard Extended Serial Adapter™ links located up to 43 kilometers (26 miles) away. For added configuration flexibility, industry-standard channel extenders are also supported.

HRC fully supports the Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy command set, including P/DAS. On S/370 and S/390® systems that do not support PPRC, HRC benefits can be implemented through Hitachi Copy Migration Manager.

Hitachi Remote Copy, Hitachi Extended Remote Copy, and Hitachi Copy Migration Manager are available under license and an HDS Services Agreement. The semi-synchronous option is available only via Hitachi Copy Migration Manager software.

Extended Serial Adapters are compatible with ESCON® protocol.

HXRC—reliable remote copy over unlimited distances.
Need long-distance remote copy? HXRC can provide it. Whether your remote site is down the block, across town, or thousands of miles away, HXRC meets your requirements. Functionally compatible with the industry-standard Extended Remote Copy (XRC), HXRC uses an asynchronous copy approach to deliver high data integrity with minimal performance impact to your primary system. Using DFSMS, an industry-standard host software component, HXRC maintains the integrity of your data. (The level of data currency will vary based on the circumstances involved.)

Local and remote data migration.
Both HRC and HXRC can be used for data migration. HRC moves data between 7700 LVIs in your data center or to a remote 7700 subsystem. With minimal performance impact, HXRC and HRC's semi-synchronous copy option migrates data between 7700's, no matter how great the distance between them. And best of all, there's no disruption in system operations. Your applications continue to run smoothly throughout data migration.

Added support from HDS licensed software.
Hitachi Copy Migration Manager is an optional user productivity tool created especially for the 7700. When used in conjunction with HRC, the Hitachi Copy Migration Manager permits users to select LVIs to be copied and verify the status of remote copy operation at any time. Running on a dedicated PC attached to the 7700's internal LAN, the Hitachi Copy Migration Manager ensures seamless, worry-free remote copy support of even your most critical data sets.

Hi-Track® Storage Expert Systems

Installed with Hitachi Data Systems hardware and part of HDS' maintenance agreement, Hi-Track monitors HDS storage systems and mainframes 24x7 to protect against unforeseen disruption. Hi-Track makes extensive use of expert systems to analyze raw data, determine the cause of the problem, and recommend necessary action—while ensuring the confidentiality of your information.

More specifically, Hi-Track improves efficiency by:

  • Monitoring and collecting environmental/technical data
  • Analyzing fault-symptom codes
  • Running remote diagnostics
  • Transmitting error information to specialists
  • Recommending corrective actions.

Hi-Track is foremost an economical service supplement because it assures immediate service without tradeoff—you don't have to maintain a 24x7 service staff and you don't have to wait should systems go down. When Hi-Track detects a discrepancy, the system automatically dispatches a service representative with the parts needed to resolve the problem before it can have an impact on business operations. In other cases, when all that's needed is a microcode patch, the problem can be solved over the phone.

Multiplatform Support

Highlights

  • A single storage platform for your entire data center
  • Quick and easy mainframe/open systems data sharing
  • UNIX® volume backup/restore from your MVS host
  • Planning assistance from HDS Professional Services
Effective data sharing between disparate platforms—especially the sharing of very large files—is one of the more daunting tasks facing today's data center managers. Hitachi Data Systems makes this task much easier with three multiplatform support functions that let you share data—quickly, easily, and safely—between your S/390 and open systems platforms. Designed specifically for the Hitachi Freedom 7700, Hitachi Multiplatform Resource Sharing (HMRS), Hitachi Multiplatform Data Exchange (HMDE), and Hitachi Multiplatform Backup/Restore (HMBR) deliver the proven mainframe strengths of the 7700 to your open systems environment. HDS is a well-established leader in the S/390-compatible marketplace, providing quality storage solutions to a wide variety of business enterprises. We bring our expertise to the open systems arena, offering you the high availability, reliability, and performance that S/390 customers have enjoyed for years.

HMRS—data sharing has never been easier.
Through the unique capabilities of HMRS, Hitachi Freedom 7700 becomes the single storage platform for your entire data center. No more late nights trying to forecast platform-specific storage requirements—HMRS and the 7700 bring you all the benefits and conveniences of a single multiplatform environment. You can rest assured that your Sun Solaris 2.5, HP-UX 10.x, IBM AIX™ 4.1.4, Windows NT, Sequent DYNIX ptx 4.4 on Symmetry and NUMA-Q, and your mainframe will share data seamlessly through HMRS.

HMDE—innovative data transfer that's fast and reliable.
This unique feature makes it easy to transfer data between MVS and UNIX platforms, without tying up your valuable communication links. HMDE delivers high-speed data transfer through Extended Serial Adapter™ and SCSI channels. Any data that you can unload, create, or copy as a sequential data set in MVS, can be read directly by a UNIX server, such as Sun, HP, or IBM's RS6000.

Extended Serial Adapters are compatible with ESCON protocol.

HMBR solves your backup/restore dilemma.
In today's UNIX environments, disk farms of a terabyte or more are becoming commonplace. Unfortunately, open systems tape technology cannot easily accommodate these large farms. So, how do you back up and restore a one-terabyte disk farm?

HMBR solves this dilemma by letting you back up and restore your UNIX volumes from your MVS host. No special software or procedures are required. To MVS, your UNIX volumes appear as devices which are accessible via the standard DFDSS utility. From there, you can store your data using your existing mainframe-based storage management procedures.

HDS Professional Services puts your mind at ease.
Help is available if you need it. HDS Professional Services works with you to develop and implement a multiplatform storage plan that fully meets your needs. Our specialists are skilled in all aspects of multiplatform support, and they can assist you with installation and implementation of the HMRS, HMBR, and HMDE features, if you so desire.
